Considerations When Making A Wire Rope Selection

by admin | Sep 7, 2015 | Rigging

In response to the demands of different industries and for different jobs, the wire rope industry has developed many different types of ropes. These wire ropes can include heavy duty cables to excellent yet very durable options as well.

Selecting the correct wire rope is essential on all types of jobs both for safety as well as for the specific designs or characteristics of the rope. By matching the right size and type of rope instead of directly using the same string for all projects you will not only save on the cost of constantly having to replace your wire ropes, but you will also find less wear and tear on equipment as well.

Construction of the Rope

All wire rope is made up of multiple strands or wires which, when uniquely configured in the rope, provide the characteristics of that particular design. In reality, the designs are bundles of wires within the rope, leading to a synergistic strength and high levels of resistance to abrasion, fatigue and crushing.

In all types of rope, there will be several different benefits found in the construction. Commonly for a broad range of operations factors such as maximum fatigue resistance as well as abrasion resistance will be critical.

Also, particular options in the design and the construction of the rope are also used to prevent the wire rope from rotating. Rotation resistant rope can be used with a swivel, making it a must-have on many cranes and jobs.

Crushing Resistance

Another particular factor to consider when selecting the right rope for the job is resistance to crushing on drums. This allows for the use of multi-layer spooling without any damage to the rope, which is common on lower quality ropes where crossover points occur.

Crushing resistance is critical when choosing a wire rope company and design. Some companies are recognized for the ability to create compact, highly durable ropes which will hold their shape as well as maintain an active internal core to the rope even when exposed to high levels of external pressure on or off the drum.

Carefully select your wire rope for the specific rigging or use you require. If you aren’t sure which rope is best suited to your needs, or need help in making a comparison, call your supplier and discuss the various options before making a final decision.
