Laser Cut Aluminum: Characteristics And Applications

by admin | Sep 11, 2017 | Metals & Alloys

The process of laser cutting results in slicing or engraving a specific material using a highly focused and powered laser beam. It usually operates under the direction of a computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine. While the method is popular for carving many different metals, many companies request laser cut aluminum from metal suppliers for their projects.

Lasers and Aluminum

Lasers provide tight, clean and exact cuts. The highly focused laser beams reduce the amount of “kerf” (material) removed during the cut is minuscule – when compared to other methods, e.g., blades. Nitrogen is the preferred gas for this method. It helps to blow the molten aluminum through the cut edge. It also produces a shiny and even bright edge on all laser cut aluminum parts.

Using a laser to cut through aluminum is possible for different thicknesses. In fact, the method can slice through this metal up to 1/8 inches in thickness. However, operators must work carefully since the metal is reflective and, therefore, the lens of the laser may be subjected to damage if the metal is too thick.

Aluminum Applications

Aluminum is a popular metal. It has the best weight to strength ratio. It is a corrosion resistant material with appealing aesthetic qualities. Aluminum:

  • Has superior malleability
  • Offers easy machinability
  • Possesses good thermal and electrical conductivity
  • Is very easy to recycle

These properties and characteristics make it excellent for certain industrial applications. Laser cut aluminum finds itself desirable for use in such industrial concerns as

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Transportation

They are popular in the form of cog wheels or gears.

Laser Cut Aluminum

Laser cutting is adaptable to creative shaping and design. It is becoming increasingly popular for projects where unique customization is a prerequisite. Laser cut aluminum, therefore, is perfect for those who require detailed shapes and holes of all sizes.
