How Water Gets Through Concrete and What Impact That Has on Home Foundation Repair

by Alina alford | Oct 6, 2017 | Foundation

It would seem that concrete is an impressive and impenetrable force to keep water out. It is for these reasons that concrete is the staple for basement walls and without it, the basement would be soaked to the brim at all times. Interestingly, it kind of is.

A typical basement is well underground and beneath the foundation of the home. A Home Foundation Repair would often ignore the basement entirely to fix the basement roof. But, sometimes these two things come to a head. How can water from the basement affect the foundation? It has a whole lot to do with good old-fashioned science.

Water Through the Walls

Water will get through anything. If there is a crack, water will come through. Supposing that water is not common is absurd because water already exists on the ground and is constantly seeking a downward flow from rainfall. The basement is protected by concrete, stone builds, and often drywall.

Tough and Mighty Concrete

Concrete is the main line of defense, but it has a flaw. Concrete is still porous, as it is not a perfectly impenetrable stone and rock mix. Water can come through the concrete ever slightly through its pores. It comes through and transfers into vapor. This is why basements also seem a little damp and the areas behind the wall are invariably humid and damp at all times.

If water can penetrate through the walls in the form of vapor, there is nothing stopping it from penetrating through the ceiling and affecting the foundation. In this regard, the vapors from the water simply existing in the basement could hurt the quality of the foundation. A Home Foundation Repair may look at how water is coming through the basement, and what impact that can have on its strength.ToledoBasement Repair will assess all factors in not just repairing the area, but sealing it up.

Any damage, however mild, could seep to other parts of the basement, collect mold, and perpetuate an environment where mold feeds off water and more water encourages more mold. The mold can make its way to every area of the basement. Mold is the real killer if left untreated. You can pay a visit to Facebook page for more information.
