When it Comes to Handguns, Knowledge and Training Saves Lives

If you’re a handgun owner in Texas or a prospective owner of firearms then you should be aware that you are required to take a concealed handgun class in order to receive your concealed handgun carry permit. The state of Texas requires all concealed handgun carriers to register with the Texas Department of Safety and take a certification course taught by DOS licensed instructors. This process serves several critical purposes.

Firstly, registering with the Department of Public Safety provides the state with accountability for gun owners. This requirement helps to stymie the sale of illegal weapons and prevents criminals and the mentally ill from purchasing and carrying firearms. Overall this increases the safety of the general public by decreasing the odds that potentially dangerous individuals will be able to obtain handguns and shooting training.

Secondly, a concealed handgun class ensures that licensed and registered owners have the necessary skills and knowledge to prevent unnecessary death or injury. This includes safe weapon handling, proper cleaning and maintenance, and what to do in the event of a weapons malfunction such as a hang-fire or jam. The information taught at a concealed handgun class does save lives.

The chances are that if you own a handgun and are seeking a concealed carry permit, then you are interested in using your weapon for self-defense.  A concealed weapon handgun class is not only a legal requirement but it also increases the odds that if the time comes when you must draw your weapon you will be able to effectively utilize your handgun and defend yourself instead of accidentally harming yourself or an innocent bystander. The truth is, that no matter how proficient you may think you are with your handgun, there is no substitute for the proper training that can be obtained from attending a concealed handgun class.

There were 52,447 deliberate and 23,237 accidental non-fatal gunshot injuries in the United States during 2000. Almost fifty percent of gunshot injuries yearly are the result of accidental discharge. Even if you are well trained, refreshing your basic skills and knowledge can only be a benefit to you, as it will increase your overall expertise and make you safer.

A gun in the wrong hands is a dangerous and unpredictable weapon. However when properly used a gun is like any other tool used to protect an individual. The proper training and the right knowledge dramatically reduce the risk of accidents occurring during firearm operations. This is why a concealed handgun class is required by the state and should be attended by any gun owner.
